1) What is AquaStretch Myofascial Release technique?

AquaStretch-Global-Logo transparent.png

Aquastretch is a hands-on buoyancy-assisted aquatic manual therapy. What separates this technique from land-based passive manual therapy is that AquaStretch uses buoyancy and intuitive movement to assist in patient recovery.

AquaStretch is a myofascial release technique. Fascia is a connective tissue that lies beneath the skin and encapsulates; as well as separates, muscles and organs. This tissue essentially acts like a spider web throughout the whole body. One AquaStretch technique can often provide relief in more than one area of the body.

This technique has many applications such as decreasing pain, increasing range of motion and improving sport performance. Many patients report that they also have improved quality of sleep. Outstanding results have also been seen in patients with long-standing frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), providing significant improvement to shoulder range of motion in as little as one visit.

This assisted stretching and myofascial release technique is known to free the body of restrictions that limit flexibility and may cause pain with movement. Having clinically proven results in conditioning, rehabilitation and physical therapy, AquaStretch is an extraordinary type of recovery exercise. Benefits include:

1. Restore Flexibility lost from prior accidents, surgeries, sports injuries or over-training.
2.
Increase Wellness Motivation by reducing chronic aches & pains and improving sleep.
3.
Decrease Muscle Soreness/Tension due to intense physical training or excessive workouts.
4
. Increase Training Efficiency by decreasing recovery time from workout soreness.
5.
Help Get “Loose” before competition because of the profound relaxation benefit.
6.
Improve Sports Performance by restoring systemic flexibility and reducing pain.

3) What does a session feel like ?

The pressure ranges from a gentle skin depth touch to a deeper trigger point closer to the bone touch. The pressure from AquaStretch should never be beyond your tolerance and it is important to give regular feedback to the faciliator during the treatment.

Some clients may experience a slight tingling , others might feel an ache, tension or pulling sensation, this is perfectly normal and safe. You may feel a gentle to deep stretch on the area being treated.

The AquaStretch technique helps to unravel, reorganize and lengthen the underlying connective tissue allowing for better movement, flexibility and health.

The faciliator treats all areas of the body to positively affect your session outcome. For example, we may work on the hips and lower back to help reduce tension in the neck which in turn can cause headaches. This is the benefit of a whole-body approach that makes AquaStretch so effective.

Because each client is different, the number of sessions required may vary. However, a general rule is that you should notice a change in your condition very quickly with AquaStretch.

Myofascial Release : The term myofascial is derived from myo (muscle) and fascia (the all-encompassing connective tissue). Fascia is connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fibre and muscle in place. This connective tissue does more than provide internal structure and has more nerve endings than muscle making it almost as sensitive as skin. When stressed, traumatised or emotionally charged fascia tightens up.

4) What Tools do we use ?

We utilise a floatable pillow for the head to ensure comfortable relaxed position in some moves and confortable ankle weights to anchor your leg down to aid in the stretching movements.

5) What is the difference between Hydrotherapy and AquaStretch?

The difference between hydrotherapy and aquatic therapy is that aquatic therapy uses water as the primary treatment modality, whereas hydrotherapy can also include other methods such as heat packs, cold packs, electrical stimulation, ultrasound waves or land based massage .

AquaStretch is a whole body facilitated stretch. This means that you allow your body to follow its intuitive movements, with the faciliator in the water with you throughout the session.

Unlike many treatments, you are not having the treatment done to you by the facilitator, whilst you remain static,  but instead you are participating in your own experience and treatment, with the faciliator working on you, with lots of movement, guiding and pressure applied in the water. You need to allow your body to move in whichever way you feel would assist your stretch.

AquaStretch works on the whole body however unlike many treatments, it targets your connective tissue ( Fascia) which is like the glue that connects everything to everything else within the body. Connective tissue can get tight and knotted like muscles and needs to be released.

There are more sensory connections in the fascia than in muscle, hence we focus on the need to loosen the fascia,  so less pain is felt after an Aqua Stretch therapy session.

6) Any clinical research on  AquaStretch?

For a growing number of people living with chronic pain, Aqua Stretch is proving to be some much-sought relief for the body.

Lynda Keane at Middlesex University in London, England, looked at the effects of Aqua Stretch versus land stretching on people living with chronic lower back pain. The study revealed AquaStretch to be beneficial in reducing pain, disability and kinesiophobia while improving quality of life in subjects with chronic low back pain. The data showed between week’s 6 and 12 the reduction in pain starts to plateau for the land based stretching group while it continued to improve in the Aqua Stretch group.

The reason AquaStretch works so well is because the water allows you to stretch multidimensionally into positions that are not possible on land or the therapists plinth. The water also allows the body to float and allows you to identify and stretch fascial restrictions more effectively, and help our clients move with ease..
